Skardu Travel Guide: Best Time, Top Places and a 5-Day Itinerary
Skardu is the capital of Baltistan and the gateway to the Karakoram. From here, road trips lead to five of the world’s highest mountain ranges, alpine lakes that stay frozen into spring, and the door of K2 treks. It is the single most rewarding base for a northern Pakistan trip, and this guide covers how to get there, the best time to visit, the places worth your days, and a realistic 5-day plan. You can browse our ready-made Skardu tour packages or ask us to build a custom one.
How to Get to Skardu
The quick way is the 50-minute flight from Islamabad. It is also the part of the trip most affected by weather: flights are sometimes delayed or moved to mornings when the valley haze rises after midday, so keep half a day of buffer on both ends. The road option is a memorable trip in itself, driving the Karakoram Highway through Chilas with an overnight stop, then turning up the Indus into Baltistan. In summer you can also route through Hunza or over the Deosai plateau if the pass is open. We arrange both flights and private 4x4s with vetted drivers.
Best Time to Visit Skardu
April brings cherry blossom to the orchards around the city. May and June are the sweet spot: clear skies, green fields, and roads to every valley open. July and August remain workable in much of Baltistan because the region sits in the monsoon rain shadow, northern Pakistan’s exception to an unstable season. September and early October deliver crisp air and golden autumn color, our favorite window for photography. Winter is for hardy travelers: frozen lakes and snow-covered rooftops, with flight cancellations more likely. If you are weighing other regions too, see our month-by-month guide to the best time to visit Pakistan.

Top Places to Visit around Skardu
Satpara Lake
A short drive above the city, Satpara mirrors the mountains that hold it. An early morning visit almost guarantees still water that doubles the peaks.

Lower Kachura Lake and Shangrila Resort
The postcard lake of Pakistan. Even if you skip the resort, the shoreline walk with tea in hand is the classic Skardu moment.
Upper Kachura Lake
Thirty minutes of rough road from its famous sibling buys you a quieter, wilder lake surrounded by pines. Few day-trippers make the detour, which is exactly the point.
Shigar Valley and Shigar Fort
Shigar opens a lush valley under the big peaks, and its 400-year-old fort is now a heritage hotel you can tour even without staying. The village walk below is as good as the fort itself.
Khaplu and Khaplu Fort
East along the Indus, Khaplu is a whole different valley of terraced fields and old palaces, best as an overnight rather than a day trip.
The Cold Desert at Katpana
Yes, a desert of golden dunes at 2,200 meters, cold under blue ice-blue skies. Sunset here, with mountains behind the sand, is one of Baltistan’s strangest sights.
Deosai National Park and Sheosar Lake
In summer months the plateau above Skardu turns into a rolling alpine meadow full of wildflowers, marmots, and the sweeping Sheosar Lake. The road crosses 4,000-meter passes, so it is strictly a mid-June to October trip. Our 8-day Deosai, Hunza and Skardu road package covers it end to end.

Manthokha Waterfall
A tall single-drop waterfall in the Kharmang valley, reached on a day loop from the city when the road and water flow are in your favor.
A 5-Day Skardu Itinerary
Day 1: Arrive, acclimatize, evening at the Katpana dunes for sunset. Day 2: Lower and Upper Kachura lakes, then Satpara before it crowds. Day 3: Shigar Fort and valley villages, with Manthokha Waterfall if the group is up for the drive. Day 4: The big day out: Deosai plateau and Sheosar Lake, weather and season permitting. Day 5: Khaplu morning or a relaxed return flight, with the city bazaar and K2 viewpoint beforehand. Shorter on time? Three days cover the lakes, desert, and Shigar comfortably. Overseas travelers with two weeks should combine Skardu with Hunza on one of our 2027 guided group tours.
Where to Stay in Skardu
City hotels put you near food and logistics; lakeside resorts near Kachura trade convenience for setting. Standards vary widely in Baltistan, which is why we only use hotels our team has personally checked, and we match them to your budget and the season rather than leaving it to the booking desk.
Skardu FAQ
Do I need a permit to visit Skardu?
Most tourist spots around Skardu need no permit at all. A few sensitive zones do require advance NOC paperwork for foreign visitors, and we handle those applications as part of your package.
Is Skardu safe for tourists?
Yes. Skardu has hosted a growing flow of international and overseas Pakistani visitors for years. We use licensed guides, known drivers, and hotels we trust, and we track road conditions daily during the season.
How many days are enough for Skardu?
Four to six days is the comfortable middle. Three days work for the classics; the Deosai and Khaplu additions are worth the extra nights.
