Pakistan Visa 2027: E-Visa, Visa on Arrival and the LOI

Somewhere between the dream of Karakoram peaks and the reality of an application form, most travellers to Pakistan get stuck. The good news is that the system became genuinely manageable a few years back, and most applicants who follow it properly are approved without drama. The bad news is that there are three separate routes to a tourist visa, and picking the wrong one is behind nearly every delay we hear about. This is how it actually works in practice, from a team that deals with Pakistani visas every week.

The three routes to a Pakistan tourist visa

Almost everything else in this guide hangs off one decision: which of these three doors you knock on first.

1. The online e-visa (the normal choice)

Pakistan runs an online visa portal operated by NADRA, and for most nationalities it is the fastest, cheapest and least painful option. You create an account, choose the tourist category, upload your documents, pay the fee and wait for an electronic travel authorisation. Once approved, the visa is stamped on arrival at the airport. No embassy appointment, no courier, no passport couriered halfway across a continent.

2. Visa on arrival (fast, but conditional)

Certain nationalities and categories qualify for visa on arrival, usually limited to a short stay and often requiring an approved electronic authorisation before you fly plus a letter of invitation from a licensed tour operator. Do not assume it applies to you. Airlines check the approval, and without it you will not be allowed to board, even though the airport in Pakistan would have issued the stamp.

3. Embassy or consulate visas

Still the route for some nationalities and for travellers with unusual cases: extended stays, business activity attached to a tourist trip, families applying together on one file. Slower, more paperwork, appointment dependent, but reliable when the online system returns an odd error.

Why the letter of invitation decides everything

The single most common reason a Pakistan visa application stalls is documentary: the itinerary does not match, the hotel bookings look thin, and there is no letter of invitation. An LOI from a licensed operator is not a formality. It tells immigration that a real, accountable company is expecting you, that your dates and route make sense, and that someone on the ground can vouch for your plans.

For a traveller this matters because it converts a risky application into a routine one. For anyone travelling north, into Gilgit-Baltistan or the border districts, it also starts the conversation about the permits you will need after arrival.

We issue invitation letters and handle the whole file for travellers who book with us. Details are on our Pakistan visa services page.

The document checklist that actually gets approved

  • Passport with at least six months validity and a blank page
  • A recent photograph that meets the portal’s exact specification, which is stricter than most
  • Confirmed return flight or onward travel
  • Hotel bookings, or an itinerary with named accommodation for every night
  • Bank statement or proof of funds, usually three months
  • Letter of invitation if your category or nationality needs one
  • Vaccination certificates where required, including polio requirements that apply to certain routes and airlines

Timing: when to apply and when to panic

Treat two weeks as the minimum for an e-visa and four to six weeks as the comfortable window, because portal review slows around public holidays and applications bounce back for small things: a scanned passport page with a shadow across it, a photo with the wrong background, dates that contradict the flight booking. If your trip starts in under ten days and you have not applied, call the operator you are travelling with before you call an embassy.

Five mistakes worth avoiding

  1. Applying for the wrong category, usually business when the trip is tourism, or single entry when your route re-enters Pakistan
  2. Booking flights before the visa is approved, which then pushes you to make rushed, sloppy changes
  3. Uploading photographs that fail the spec: plain background, no glasses, exact dimensions
  4. An itinerary that names three cities in two days and reads like fiction
  5. Ignoring vaccination rules, then meeting them at check-in

Landing: the first ninety minutes

Immigration is straightforward if your paperwork matches. Expect fingerprints and a few questions about your itinerary. Currency declaration is worth taking seriously: declare what you are carrying and keep the receipt, because undeclared cash at exit creates avoidable trouble. Outside arrivals, tourist SIM counters and airport pickups are usually the first genuinely useful things you will spend money on.

If you want that first hour to be boring in the best possible way, arrange the arrival pickup in advance. Our team meets travellers at Islamabad and Lahore with the paperwork already in hand; start from the contact page.

After the visa: the permits nobody mentions

The visa gets you into the country. It does not automatically get you into every valley. Restricted districts, certain border corridors and some trekking zones require a no-objection certificate, arranged locally through a licensed operator with your passport and itinerary. This is normal, cheap relative to a flight, and completely routine when planned ahead. It is also the step independent travellers most often discover at the wrong moment, standing at a checkpoint at dusk.

Frequently asked questions

How long does a Pakistan tourist visa take?

Usually seven to ten working days through the online portal, longer in peak season or when documents are re-submitted.

Do I need a letter of invitation?

Many nationalities and all visa-on-arrival travellers do. It is the cheapest insurance you can add to an application.

Can I extend a tourist visa inside Pakistan?

Extensions are possible through the local immigration office in Islamabad, typically granted in short blocks, and best started a week before expiry rather than on the last day.

Is the visa enough for Gilgit-Baltistan?

The visa covers entry. Some districts additionally require a permit, arranged through your operator once your route is fixed.
