Pakistan Travel Costs 2027: Real Daily Budgets for Foreigners

Every traveller asks the same question in a different way: what will Pakistan actually cost me? The honest answer depends less on the country and more on how you move through it. A week in Hunza on shared transport and guesthouse rooms costs a fraction of the same week with private drivers and heated rooms. Here are real working numbers, drawn from the trips we run and the budgets travellers report back to us.

Daily budget bands (per person, excluding international flights)

Style Daily range What it buys
Backpacker USD 35 to 55 Guesthouses, shared vans, local food, one paid activity every second day
Comfortable USD 80 to 130 Good hotels, private car with driver on some legs, restaurants, a guide where it counts
Premium USD 160 to 260 Best rooms in the region, private transport throughout, guided days, internal flights

Two things bend these numbers hard: altitude and distance. In the north, transport and lodging cost more because everything, including diesel and vegetables, arrives by the same road you did.

What individual things cost

  • Budget hotel room in a city: USD 20 to 35. Comfortable: 50 to 90. A heritage or lakeside room in peak season: 120 and up.
  • Meal at a local restaurant: USD 3 to 6. A good dinner in Islamabad or Lahore: USD 12 to 25.
  • Intercity coach, Islamabad to Gilgit: roughly USD 20 to 30 for a long, spectacular day.
  • Domestic flight, Islamabad to Gilgit or Skardu: USD 90 to 160 depending on season and baggage.
  • Private car with driver, per day: USD 70 to 120, fuel and mountain wear included.
  • Jeep transfer where the road ends: USD 25 to 60 per vehicle, shared where possible.
  • Local guide, per day: USD 30 to 60. Mountain and trekking guides cost more.

Pakistani rupee notes and travel budget for a Pakistan trip

Where budgets quietly fall apart

Three costs surprise people. First, trekking logistics: porters, mules and cooks are charged per day and per kilogram, so a ten-day trek with heavy bags adds up fast. Second, single supplements: mountain hotels price on double occupancy, and solo travellers pay the difference. Third, peak season: June to August and the autumn leaf weeks in Hunza are when room rates and transport prices stop being polite.

Cash, cards and the ATM reality

Cards work in hotels, larger restaurants and shops in Islamabad, Lahore and Karachi. Beyond that, assume cash. ATMs exist in Gilgit, Skardu and Hunza but fail on random days, and they cap withdrawals. Carry a few hundred dollars in clean notes changed in the cities, keep a second card, and never let your last cash sit in a wallet you left in the hotel.

A realistic ten-day northern budget

Islamabad to Hunza and back, comfortable style, two travellers sharing: about USD 1,050 each on the ground. Transport is the biggest line at roughly 350, accommodation 300, food 180, permits, entries and guides 130, buffers and shopping the rest. The same route backpacker-style on shared vans and guesthouses lands near USD 500.

How to spend less without losing the trip

Travel in May, September or early October. Join a fixed departure instead of building a private trip, which is exactly how our 2027 group departures are priced. Share jeeps and guides, which is normal and how locals travel. Eat where the drivers eat. Spend money on the things you cannot repeat: a guide in the old city, a boat on Attabad, the extra day in a valley you fell for.

Frequently asked questions

Is Pakistan cheap for foreign tourists?

Daily life is inexpensive; transport to remote valleys is not. Overall, a comfortable northern trip costs roughly half of a comparable trip in Western Europe.

How much cash should I carry?

Enough to survive three days without an ATM, plus a reserve card. Most travellers are comfortable with USD 300 to 500 in cash for a two-week trip.

Should I tip?

Tipping is welcome, not compulsory. Guides and drivers expect a gesture at trip end, roughly five to ten percent for good service.
